Of Wild Geese and Wild Oats

"I was right!" the Doctor exclaimed as he spotted Donna.

Donna fumbled with her blouse buttons. "Hm?"

"They don't have cyan grapes in your time! I looked all over. "

"Oh." She smiled slyly.

"'Oh?' That's it? At least admit I was right."

"Yep." She adjusted her skirt.

The Doctor frowned. "Where were you all afternoon, anyway?"

She gestured to a muscular man unloading wine barrels. "Pierre gave me a tour."

"Oh!" The Doctor brightened. "Of the cellars?"

Donna grinned. "Of the hayloft."

She turned and sashayed towards the TARDIS before the Doctor could pick his jaw off the ground.

And so should you!

Full disclosure: As you may have noticed, I've been suffering from a combination of Real Life Stress and writer's block keeping me from producing much of anything for way too long now. So I can't make any promises. I have a list of stockings I'd like to stuff, but the fact is it may simply not happen. Please keep this in mind before you decide to stuff mine, okay?

Season's Greetings everyone! :)

So I'll try to get that out of the way over the next few days. Starting with a drabble I wrote for the wonderful dark_aegis.

Fic Rec: Can You Tell Me How to Get There?
tardisglass
yamx
Can You Tell Me How to Get There? by Bravada should, by all rights, be crack. And it is, in a way. But it's so much more than that. The author describes it as a "dystopian tragicomedy." It's a crossover between Sesame Street (Really!) and US politics (REALLY!). It's not exactly RPF in that no real politicians are named, but you can make your own guess as to who "the president" is. (Hint: It's not Obama.)

It's a dark, bleak and yet cracky look at what happens to the country, and especially to Sesame Street and its denizens, after the 2012 election. There's not much I can say about it without giving it away, but everyone has to read this. It really needs to go viral. So read it, comment, and send the link to all your friends. :)

There's an official BBC coda to the episode, that tells us what happens.... after. (I won't say after what, for people who haven't seen the ep yet.) It's a scene by Chris Chipnal, unshot, but illustrated with drawings and there's [name withheld to avoid spoilers] real voice being all heartbreaking.

MASSIVE SPOILERS, so don't watch if you haven't seen TATM yet. But if you have, you MUST watch this.

KIVA Has Free Trials--Help a Poor Person at No Cost to You!
tardisglass
yamx
Kiva.org is a brilliant webpage where people whom traditional banks wouldn't lend to (because traditional banks only give you a loan if you can prove you don't need it) can apply for loans to improve their lives--anything from housing, starting a business, school fees, food, transportation, etc.

People like you and me can then give them loans, starting at $25. The money is pooled and given to the projects via a field partner. That way, the recipient can improve their life and often that of their community. (Don't worry, you don't have to give anyone your banking information, you just pay in via PayPal or credit card. They also do gift cards so you can give someone else money to lend to a project of their choice.)

This is not a donation. It's a loan. Eventually, the money will be returned to your Kiva account. (Usually. Of course, there is a risk the person might default, but so far 98.94% of all Kiva loans have been repaid.)

Once you have the money back in your account, you can choose to re-lend it, donate it to Kiva for their operating cost, or withdraw it and spend it on whatever else you like.

It's an awesome project that supports many worthy causes. If you have a few bucks kicking around that you won't need in the immediate future, this is a great way to put them to work.

And the best news: at the moment they have free trials. A millionaire is founding free $25 loans for first-time Kiva users. If you sign up now, you can lend $25 to whatever project you want without spending a cent of your own money. How cool is that?

There's really no reason not to do this, so click here! :)

It's never been this easy to help someone! I just signed up myself and lend the free money and some of my own, and it's surprisingly fun and satisfying to pick a project to support. :)

Thanks & enjoy!

P.S.: Third Time's the Charm will be posted here tomorrow.

A stylized grey badge with the red OTW logo taking up the middle and the words Survey Taker bracketing the logo I took the OTW Community Survey!

And so should you!

I learned a bunch pf cool stuff about the OTW just by taking their survey. (It takes about 15 minutes.)

Other than that, my job has been crazy lately, and I haven't had a chance to really write in a while. But there's hope--things might be calming down! I also still need to re-post a bunch of stocking stuffers... Will try to get on that soon.

Two Fic Recs: Doctor Who and Sherlock/LotR
tardisglass
yamx
Two awesome fics I've come across lately:

A Tale of Suspension: Lonely in the Dark by a_phoenixdragon. (Link goes to the master post, which contains full headers, art, and links to all parts.)

It's hard to describe this fic without giving too much away or going on for pages and pages. In a nutshell, it's the tale of how Jack first meets Eleven--but it's so much more than that. This fic has it all: plotty adventure, daring rescues, angst and raw emotions, tenderness, and a discussion of so many things that should have been said in canon. And the ending is perfect, though I can't tell you why without giving it away.

Everyone should read this. Heck, it should be canon.

And now for something completely different: Unexpected Journeys by story_monger.

This fic should be crack. It really should be. The author took the casting decisions made for The Hobbit and transplanted them into BBC's Sherlock. John is a hobbit and Sherlock is a dragon, and they share a flat in an AU version of London where that is unusual, but not impossible. Somehow, the author manages to use that cracky set-up to enhance and illuminate the canon characters in a way that makes so much bloody sense. The story is complete, but I really hope there'll be a sequel at some point, simply because I want more in this verse.
